Saying 104: When the Bridegroom Leaves

Gospel of Thomas Saying 104 Mark 2:18–20; Matthew 9:14–15; Luke 5:33–35

Invited to pray and fast, Jesus asks what sin he has committed or how he has been defeated; rather, when the bridegroom leaves the bridal chamber, then let people fast and pray.

Commentary

Fasting is framed as a response to defeat or absence. The saying tolerates the practice only under a condition that, in Thomas’s realised present, has not arrived.
