Saying 37: When You Strip Without Shame

Gospel of Thomas Saying 37 Genesis 3:7; Papyrus Oxyrhynchus 655

Asked when he will appear to them, Jesus answers: when you undress without being ashamed, and trample your clothes underfoot like little children, then you will see the son of the living one and not be afraid.

Commentary

Often read as a baptismal image — candidates were baptised naked — and equally often as a reversal of Eden, where clothing first became necessary. The garments are the body, or shame, or both.
