Saying 61: Salome and the Undivided

Gospel of Thomas Saying 61 Luke 17:34; Mark 15:40

Two will rest on a couch; one will die, one will live. Salome asks who he is to climb on her couch and eat from her table; he says he comes from the one who is undivided. Whoever is undivided will be full of light, and whoever is divided will be full of darkness.

Commentary

Salome, named in Mark among the women at the crucifixion, appears here as a householder who questions Jesus and then declares herself his disciple. Her exchange is the book’s most positive portrayal of a woman.
