Saying 16: Not Peace but Division
People think I have come to bring peace; I have come to bring divisions — fire, sword, war. Five in a house will be three against two, and they will stand alone.
Commentary
Luke ends with the household split. Thomas adds a further step: those who are divided from their families “will stand as solitary ones” — the *monachos*, the single one, who is the hero of sayings 49, 75 and 106.
