Saying 85: Adam Was Not Worthy of You

Gospel of Thomas Saying 85 Romans 5:12–14; 1 Corinthians 15:45–49

Adam came from great power and great wealth, but he was not worthy of you; had he been worthy, he would not have tasted death.

Commentary

A reversal of the usual scheme in which humanity inherits Adam’s fall. In Thomas the hearer already outranks him — the ancestor is the cautionary tale, not the template.
