Saying 57: The Wheat and the Weeds

Gospel of Thomas Saying 57 Matthew 13:24–30

A man sowed good seed; his enemy sowed weeds among it at night. He would not let his workers pull the weeds in case the wheat came up with them — at harvest the weeds will be obvious, and will be pulled and burned.

Commentary

One of the very few places where Thomas preserves a judgement scene. Matthew supplies an elaborate allegorical decoding afterwards; Thomas, characteristically, does not.
