Saying 4: The Old Man and the Infant
An old man will not hesitate to ask a seven-day-old infant about the place of life, and will live; many who are first will become last, and they will become one.
Commentary
Seven days is the age of circumcision — the infant is still, just barely, undivided. The reversal of first and last is a familiar synoptic line, but Thomas adds a conclusion the canonical gospels do not: the two become a single one.
