Saying 107: The Largest Sheep

Gospel of Thomas Saying 107 Matthew 18:12–13; Luke 15:3–7

A shepherd with a hundred sheep lost the largest one. He left the ninety-nine and searched until he found it, and then told it: I love you more than the ninety-nine.

Commentary

In Luke the lost sheep is a sinner and the joy is over repentance. In Thomas it is the *largest* sheep and the shepherd loves it most — the search is for something exceptional, not something errant.
